Therisos –> Zourva –> Meskla –> Lake Agias

Driving south of Chania we will pass the village “Perivolia”. Endless orange groves take you to the entrance of the beautiful Gorge of Therisos (6 km ). An amazing ride traveling through lush vegetation and towering cliffs. Next to the road streams the Kladissos River. A beautiful landscape with tranquil sounds of flowing clear water and singing nightingales.
Therisso village is built at the foot of the “White Mountains” and has priceless history. It was the base of operations for the Greeks who revolted in 1821 with many battles against the Turkish occupation. 1,000 fighters gathered from all over Crete in 1905. Eleftherios Venizelos led the revolutionary struggle against Prince George II, seeking the union of the island Crete with the free mainland of Greece. The then headquarters of this movement have been converted into a museum.
You have the opportunity to meet the people and history of the town, as well as enjoy delicious food and tasty delicacies of Cretan cuisine in the picturesque traditional taverns.
In continuation, our route takes us to the village of Zourva, which is surrounded by beautiful green hills. These proud villagers participated in the liberation struggles of Crete and are defenders of traditions, culture and maintain the famous Cretan hospitality. Forests of cypresses, stunning views, natural beauty, caves and springs, reward tranquility, serenity and enjoyment to its visitors.
We continue to Meskla, driving alongside the river and passing through towering trees. A very attractive village surrounded by soaring mountains is home to brave and proud inhabitants, rich in history and have strong traditions. You will see crystal clear spring waters which channel through the rocks and flow beneath the towering trees of the area. At this point we can enjoy refreshing drinks and savor traditional delicacies accompanied by the sound of running water and chirping birds.
Nearby is the Gorge of Sarakina. Tall gray granite walls with minimal vegetation offers a beautiful experience to anyone who decides to cross this easy and short route.
As we return we stop at Lake Agia, 450 acres of an important ecosystem. This fresh water lake is surrounded by lush vegetation and is home to over 200 species of birds, plants, turtles, frogs and freshwater fish. You will have the chance, once again, to capture the incredible view of the magnificent “White Mountains”.
